dj sent this and asked me to host and post it for him.

good morning

"Jenn"...  the second athlete on the "cable."

very awesome..  and it shows us where improvements need to be made...

1..  left (front) arm up more with the elbow out..

2..  "elastic" arms with the chin going "forward" through the arms.. right arm needs to "stretch" behind the right shoulder...

kool huh..

hey

this is becca.. the thrid jumper to use the cable... awesome...

if you match this side by side with t-macks' last three steps... L R L on his 5.90 jump you can't find a difference in pole drop and plant..

improvements?? yes.. left (front) arm needs to go "up" so that it does not "block" and the chin can go in, releasing the shoulders..  and getting the "stretch" follow through..

we can correct those in the next session..  it just takes confidence and "relaxed" control..

i have no doubts this is the best set up to teach a correct ("free) take off...

Can I ask what length Pole are these young ladies on?

Now think of that length of pole and tell me how they can move the plant over their heads while keeping pressure on the pole and not get rejected.

My view is they are simply diving in at takeoff with the plant out front and locking out the bottom arm so they don't get rejected. I like the setup though.

Took a look at the video. Very interesting, particularly when you were helping her. When she was doing it herself she wouldn’t let that left arm move as it should. She was using a bad habit like we see in so many vaulters. Locking that left arm out to bend the pole. When you were pushing her though she started to let that left go up and back and get that chest moving into the plant and actually would create a swing. If she can get the sense that her weight needs to be in her right hand and that left needs to move up and back she might just be able to use this.
Very difficult to get them moving arms vertically at takeoff and letting their velocity and force bend the pole.
Great job!

Dave,

Awesome! I would love to build this at Nease High School! Any coaching tips? I can see this solving a multitude of training problems!

Ken Taylor

DJ,

Very, very cool. Do you have any directions on how to make a zip line/bungee setup? I'd like to put one of these together. I would need materials list & specs. Thanks,

Mike

Ingenious and awesome!! Great job!!
One practical note - I used to do that take off and come back on the runway drill like Tim St. Lawrence did and noticed that my tendency was to pick my feet up rather than really jump through the take off. I don't think you'll have that problem but keep it in the back of your mid that some may. Bubba

AWESOME!!!!!!, AWESOME!!!!!, AWESOME!!!!!.
Can you tell I love it?
What more can I say. Great coaching, great drill, great innovation!!!! I love the extension at takeoff and I am also a proponent of the chin coming in to torque the shoulders for the swing.

Tell Becca I said she looked magnificent. It is what happens when great coaches team up with great athletes and people willing to experiment and put their buts on the line.

KEWEL!!!!!

Pretty awesome indeed!
I have a few kids that could use it.
It looks simple but I know better than that.
I am sure there are some important measurements and angles to take into consideration.
What does it take to make one of those?
You should see my son now he is 8 now; he already has a free takeoff and can swing to his back.
Send me you address and we will send you a Christmas card.

bACK IN THE DAY, we did this with no spot..I dislocated my elbow landing hard! Now, we do a 2-4 step with a partner pushing & spotting the person's back/hips........what part of Florida are you now? D Butler

Yo mr. bond
what can i say,
i love the cable training. i watched it last night and you could really see progress happen with every jump. not to mention her confidence.
Immediately, i went back myself and how this would have helped me. Great Idea!
it was good to see and hear you in your coaching mode again.
keep it going!
talk at you later,
Brad

very cool!

What materials were used to build this drill system? I imagine it's quite a setup not easily duplicated!

hey mike

it's pretty basic... the major issue is stretching a 3/8" steel cable between two stable poles 100' apart...

i used wooden poles.. 18' and 20'... with stabalizing quide wires like a trapeze setup...

i have the parts to a system i can "take on the road" and set up between two football field lighting poles.. or the lighting poles at south carolina's track!!!or equal... i stretch the cable with my truck and lock it in with a chain and hugh pad lock...

i spent a lot of time setting up the finite details so the measurements work for me, the way i invision teaching the proper technique..

the sliding box drill with a full run is the next step... putting the run and plant together...

also my teaching instructions progressed just between girl one and girl two.. hopfully i will just get better.

i have always been capable of teaching the run... i envied kevin Mc because he could teach the plant like no one else... now maybe i can catch up... ; ) ;) ;)

Thanks, DJ! What do you use for the bungee/harness? How high is the cable from the ground? I'm thinking about setting this up indoors for short runs--3 lefts.

hey

the harnesses are mountain climbing harnesses... a small and a medium..

i put black tie down bungees on the rope going up to the cable/pulley.. i can use 1 to 4 bungees depending on the weight of the vaulter.. those bungees are only there to keep the vaulter from being "yanked" like you would at the end of a rope... the non-stretch rope is set so you can fall flat but not hit the surface.. as you saw with becca...

for this drill you only need about a 50 foot cable but for the sliding box drills I will use the full 100 feet…

An intriguing invention dj, thanks for sharing it.

For those looking to attempt this themselves, a similar alternative would be to use dynamic climbing rope, which, itself, would stretch to cushion that"yank" you feel when you feel when the rope catches your weight

Before the days of dynamic rope, apparently climbers that fell on static (unstretching) rope would break bones from falls of as little as 15 feet!

Plant track

Unread postby baggettpv » Mon Nov 26, 2007 1:48 am

Mine is a 24' long garage door track. 14' 4" off the floor. You can take a 8 step approach with it. The slider stops at the end of the track thus creating an arc similar to the arc of the take off. Been using it for 4 yars now and alot of kids have learned to plant using it...

specs and materials

Unread postby kwhit3 » Wed Dec 05, 2007 11:43 am

That is so cool! And it looks like a fantastic training device! As a matter of fact it would be perfect for several of my kids who are having difficulty with their takeoffs.

Could you please post the specifications and materials for the whole unit? I'd like to make one for my kids.

Thanks DJ, as usual, awesome contribution.
