2007 Pepsi Florida Relays Moved To First Week In April
Tuesday August 1, 2006
GAINESVILLE, Fla.
Typically among the first major outdoor track and field meets in the nation, the 2007 Pepsi Florida Relays will be held April 5-7 at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
Normally contested during the last week in March, the Pepsi Florida Relays will be pushed back to the first week in April.
"The big advantage is that it gives our athletes a chance to recuperate from a tough indoor season and prepare for a long outdoor season," Florida women's head coach Tom Jones said. "We feel that it will benefit us in the long run. We'll go head-to-head with some of the other big meets in the country, but Mike and I both felt it was best for our programs."
"We moved the meet because that weekend fits better into our training and racing schedules," Florida men's head coach Mike Holloway said. "With the addition of the regional championships and a longer season, we felt it was in our best interest to give our athletes more recovery and training time before a high level competition like the relays."
The Pepsi Florida Relays began in 1939 and have been held every year since with the exception of years during World War II (1942-46) and in 2006 when construction to the surrounding facilities prevented the event from being contested. At the 62nd edition of the event in 2005, more than 3,000 athletes from more than 300 high schools and universities were set to compete before inclement weather forced the final day to be canceled.
