European Championships wPV qualifying

Unread postby BruceFlorman » Wed Aug 09, 2006 6:59 am

I got up early this morning to catch the BBC webcast (which at 38Kbps looks a lot like a lava lamp) of the morning session from Göteborg. Probably wasn't the brightest move I've ever made, since it was almost all talking heads and M200 qualifying, then they went off the air before any of the top-end women opened. Oh well...

Eurosport commentary:
12:30 WOMEN'S POLE VAULT QUALIFIERS: 1. Monika Pyrek (POL) 4.40 Q 1. Svetlana Feofanova (RUS) 4.40 Q 1. Tatyana Polnova (RUS) 4.40 Q 4. Martina Strutz (GER) 4.40 Q 4. Róza Kasprzak (POL) 4.40 Q 4. Krisztina Molnár (HUN) 4.40 Q 7. Naroa Agirre (ESP) 4.40 Q 7. Yelena Isinbayeva (RUS) 4.40 Q 9. Silke Spiegelburg (GER) 4.40 Q 10. Pavla Hamácková (CZE) 4.35 q 11. Nastja Ryjikh (GER) 4.30 q 12. Joanna Piwowarska (POL) 4.30 q

12:24 Tatyana Polnova goes through, while her compatriot and the queen of this event, Yelena Isinbayeva gets set for her second jump... and that's what it's supposed to look like. Slow, technical, up and over easily goes the world champion into the final at 4.40m.

12:22 BUT DISAPPOINTMENT FOR BRITAIN: Kate Dennison fails in all three of her 4.40m attempts and is now out of the competition...

12:20 IN THE MEANTIME WE'VE GOT MORE QUALIFIERS: Krisztina Molnar eases through as did Poland's Róza Kasprzak...

12:18 NOW THE STAR OF THE SHOW ON HER FIRST, AND LIKELY ONLY JUMP OF THE DAY: World record-holder Yelena Isinbaeva, with her career best jump the all-time mark, should ease into the finals... NO! Shocker, as the Russian can't clear her first jump. Her second attempt will clearly have to suffice...

12:18 GERMAN QUALIFIER: Martina Strutz gets 4.40m on her first jump....

12:16 AUTOMATIC QUALIFYING HEIGHT: For Poland's Monika Pyrek, who easily gets over the 4.40m bar.

12:12 WOMEN'S POLE JUMP QUALIFYING: The home crowd is disappointed as the Sedish indoor champion Linda Persson unable to clear 4.35m.

11:58 WOMEN'S POLE VAULT QUALIFYING: Disappointment for Frenchwoman Vanessa Boslak, who goes out on her final effort at 4.30m. Tough break for the French team.

11:25 A RELIEVED SWEDE IN THE POLE VAULT: Maria Rendin is going to earn a qualifying mark on her last champ.

10:55 WOMEN'S POLE VAULT QUALIFYING IS UNDERWAY: Though we won't be seeing world record-holder Yelena Isinbaeva for a little bit, once the bar gets high enough...

Flash quote from Isi:
I had a soft pole on the first try, on the second I changed and it was ok. Otherwise all ok, very good conditions. The key thing is just to keep my shape. But nothing special before the final, preparation as usual, mostly doing nothing. If all ok I hope to improve my result on Saturday.

Yeah, I sure hope she does better than 4.40 on Saturday too. :)

Eric Pelle (I think that's his last name) is in Göteborg and is posting a bunch of photos from this morning over on the T&FN message board: http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?t=21520
