- KUALA LUMPUR: Pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu has broken her own national record at the World Series competition in Portugal on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old from Kedah, who is on a two-month training stint in Europe, vaulted to a new height of 4.30m en route to the silver medal.
Her previous record was 4.25m set during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March.
The SEA Games gold medallist has broken the women's pole vault a record 12 times in the last seven years.
National chief coach Hanapiah Nasir said that Roslinda's performance has been splendid this year and she is on the right track to win a medal in the Doha Asian Games in December.
“She has been improving steadily this year, breaking another national record in just three months. I believe that she is capable of improving her personal best further with a new pole, which is more stiffer than her present pole.
“Her Russian coach Genardy (Potavich) phoned me yesterday that they will be getting the new pole soon. With the new pole she will hopefully be able to jump higher,'' said Hanapiah.
Hanapiah added that according to her coach she is capable of further improving her mark by 4.45m in the next few months.
“If she is able to achieve that then she will be able to win a medal in the Asian Games. At the moment the top vaulter is from China, who has done 4.60m.
