Hanson establishes record at Cogdal meet
NORMAL - Phil Hanson established a new pole vault record and Rayme Mackinson claimed Pontiac's other first-place finish at the Cogdal Relays Saturday at Illinois State's Horton Field House.
Hanson cleared the bar at 16 feet, 2 inches, surpassing the old mark by more than a foot. His first attempt of the day originally broke the old standard of 15 feet. Hanson vaulted 15-1 on his first try and kept adding to the record before failing three times to clear 16-8.
His winning height at Cogdal is the second-best for the PTHS senior this season.

Hanson wows Cogdal crowd

NORMAL - The collective gasp from the crowd told those not watching pole vaulter Phil Hanson all they needed to know Saturday in the 40th annual Cogdal Relays indoor track and field meet at Horton Field House.
The gasp - a combination of surprise and awe - followed each of the Pontiac High School senior's three clearances, the last of which at 16 feet, 2 inches added 14 inches to the previous meet record.
Fans tried to help the Northern Iowa recruit with rhythmic clapping each time he stepped on the runway.
"It's been like that the last three meets," Hanson said. "It's real cool."
After everyone else was out of the pole vault, Hanson provided the venerable meet with a level of excitement it hasn't seen in years with a first-attempt clearance at a meet record 15-1 and followed with a first-attempt make at 15-7.
Then he ran in the 55 semifinals before returning to the runway for an attempt at 16-2, which he almost made his first attempt, but nicked on the way down. His second attempt wasn't as close, but he soared over with at least five inches to spare on his third try.
With the bar at state-leading 16-8, Hanson, who cleared 16-4 a week ago, made three attempts, none of which were close. The previous meet record of 15-0 was set by Mahomet-Seymour's Bryan Clark in 1995.
"When I first started off, I was real tired (from training)," said Hanson, whose goal is 17-6.
Pontiac coach Dave Young wasn't expecting Hanson to go so high especially considering he was also running three heats of the 55. But that sprinting may have helped loosen Hanson up for the pole vault.
"We've had a real hard conditioning week," Young said.
Hanson's performance should give him momentum heading into next Saturday's battle with reigning Class AA state champion Jake Winder of Plainfield South in the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic at Champaign. Hanson is 0-3 lifetime against Winder, whose best is 16-7.
"I think once Phil beats him, that kid won't beat him again," Young said. "Fundamentally, Phil is exceptional, but he does all the other events and (Winder) just pole vaults."
Hanson drove to Bloomington two or three nights each week this winter for pole vault workouts after grueling wrestling practices.
"I always wanted to do it," he said. "Some nights I didn't accomplish too much. I wouldn't be where I'm at without it."
Lost in Hanson's shadow Saturday was Olympia freshman Alex Freshour, who tied his personal best of 13-6 in second place. No other Spartan ninth graders have gone that high. Freshour set the grade school state meet record of 13-0 last year.

I just realized this weekend that this past summer I was vaulting with Phil. I knew his name was Phil, and he was a high schooler from down south that was jumping mid 15's as a junior. I just never put 2 and 2 together.
This kid is fast. He brings a lot of intensity down the runway.
Props to him for what he accomplished this past weekend

Well it was done indoors, but I don't think Illinois distinguishes between indoor and out for records....their website has the state record as 17-0 1/2 By Daren McDonough, Edwardsville (Sr.), 1992 ......so even if they do, he still has the highest vault by an illinois high school vaulter.
So i was way off earlier with the progression of the record....i thought i read that somewhere, but i guess i didnt'.
