Senior Carly Dockendorf entered Saturday's women's pole vault bidding for her second-career All-America honor, after a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2005, while junior vaulter Stevie Marshalek vied for her first All-America accolade. Having cleared 12 feet, 7 1/2 inches on her first attempt, however, Marshalek failed to clear the bar at 13-11/2, while Dockendorf topped out at the latter height. Collegiate record holder Chelsea Johnson won her third NCAA vault title with a second-attempt clearance at 14-9, while Dockendorf placed 11th and Marshalek 14th.

Chelsea Johnson Wins NCAA Indoor Pole Vault Title

Senior jumps 14-9 to win second individual title of her career

March 11, 2006
Source

Senior Chelsea Johnson won the second individual NCAA title of her career on Saturday as she took home the NCAA Indoor pole vault title in Fayetteville, AR.

FSU's Lacy Jansen also cleared 14-9, but Johnson won based on misses. Johnson won her first NCAA title in 2004 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as she set a collegiate record jump of 15-0. Johnson had hoped to break the collegiate indoor record, but came up short, still ending up with the win.

"I'm really happy to win today," said Johnson. "I really wanted to break the collegiate record, and had some good attempts at 15-1, but I just got tired. I want to give credit to Lacy because she had a great meet and having her out there really pushed both of us to jump as high as we did. I look forward to outdoors, because I really prefer jumping with a good tailwind, and I can't wait to keep it going."

Johnson and Jansen both had attempts at 15-1, but both failed to clear the height.

"Chelsea was tough as nails today," said Pole Vault Coach Anthony Curran. "She stuck to our game plan and really did a great job. She cleared all the bars on her first attempts up until 14-9 and jumped on two poles bigger then she'd been on all year. I'm glad to see her step up to the challenge and I know that outdoors is going to be great. She has been so consistent already this season, both indoors and out, and by the end of the season, there could be one more NCAA title and record with her name by it."
