Clemson's men's track & field performer Mitch Greeley became the first Tiger ever to earn All-America honors in the pole vault, as he finished in a tie for eighth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Pole vaulter Robbie Pratt also put up eight points for the team with his second-place finish Friday. Going into the championships, Pratt was a quarter-inch behind Oregon's Thomas Skipper. The pair pushed each other to greater heights and each cleared a final height of 18 feet 6.5 inches, an NCAA personal best for Pratt. Skipper cleared the height in less attempts than Pratt, earning himself the national title.
"It was a classic battle between the two best pole vaulters in the country, and Robbie came up second but with a great height," pole vault coach Larry Berryhill said. "When you have two national champions competing against each other, that's pretty intense."

Caldwell Finishes Eighth To Earn Indoor All-America Honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of New Mexico junior Robert Caldwell finished tied for eighth in the men's pole vault tonight at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship meet to become the second Lobo ever to earn All-America honors in the event. Caldwell, a Socorro, N.M. native, cleared 17' 6 .5" in his national meet debut, giving UNM an All-American at the indoor meet in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1989-90.

Unfortunately, fifth-year senior Derek Mackel missed all three attempts at his opening height of 17' 0.5" and did not place in his first NCAA meet. Mackel had cleared 17 feet in each of his five meets this winter and entered the meet seeded seventh with a mark of 17' 11". Mackel wasn't alone, however, as four other top-10 seeds failed to score in the unpredictable event, including No. 3 seeded Brian Mondschein of Virginia Tech, who finished 13th.

"Robert did a nice job tonight, but I feel real bad for Derek - he's really hurting right now," UNM head coach Matt Henry said. "Both of those guys are a little disappointed because they know they could've gone higher, but the pole vault is the most unpredictable event in track and field. They had a chance to learn something here tonight and they'll both have another chance to feel better in Sacramento at the (NCAA) outdoor meet."

Caldwell joined Australian Simon Arkell (1989) as the only UNM pole vaulters to take home All-America honors from the NCAA Indoor Championship meet. Fellow New Mexican Matt Gonzales (Santa Fe) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run last year to snap a 15-year All-America drought for the Lobos at the NCAA Indoor Championships.





"Derek's run just wasn't on tonight, but this was a great experience for both of these guys," UNM pole vault coach Scott Steffan said. "Robert opened up at 17 feet for the first time this year and cleared it on his first attempt. He was just under his PR on his next jump and had some good looks at 5.45 meters (17-10.50), but just missed it."

Caldwell who secured his spot in the national field with a career-high mark of 17' 7.25" two weeks ago at the Mountain West Conference Championships, cleared the opening height of 17' 0.5" on his first try and surpassed 17' 6.5" on his second attempt. Clemson's Mitch Greeley and Northern Iowa's Andre Poljanec also passed 17' 6.5" on their second run and all three men bowed out at 17' 10.5" to forge a three-way tie for eighth.

Oregon senior Tommy Skipper successfully defended his 2005 NCAA indoor pole vault title with a mark of 18' 6.5". Skipper edged the defending outdoor national champion, BYU senior Robison Pratt, who used three more attempts to clear the same height.

"We've got two of the top-16 vaulters in the country and that really says something about the kind of season they had," Steffan said. "Now its time to learn from this and get ready to jump high outdoors."

New Mexico opens the outdoor season on March 25 at Arizona.

Senior Brad Gebauer cleared 17-10 1/2 to earn a fourth-place finish in pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championship.

FAYETEVILLE, Ark. - Michigan State senior Brad Gebauer (Bad Axe, Mich.) cleared 17-10 1/2 (5.45 meters) in the pole vault and posted a fourth-place finish to earn All-America honors Friday night at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas. Gebauer had automatically qualified for the meet after leaping 18-0 ½ at the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 25 en route to his second consecutive conference pole vault title.

Gebauer was perfect on his first three jumps, but failed on three attempts to clear 18-2 ½ (5.55 meters) and advance to the next round of vaults.

Oregon's Thomas Skipper entered the competition as the top-seed and earned himself an NCAA Championship with a final vault of 18-6 ½. Robinson Pratt of BYU also converted his vault of 18-6 ½ but finished second, as he had collected more misses in previous rounds. Akron's John Russell rounded out the top three, posting a leap of 18-2 ½.

Gebauer and his Spartan teammates now turn their attention to the outdoor season, which begins March 25 at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.

Pratt Takes a Close Second at Nationals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (March 10, 2006) -- BYU's Robbie Pratt cleared his way to a second-place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships Friday.

"It was a classic battle between the two best pole vaulters in the country and Robbie came up second but with a great height," pole vault coach Larry Berryhill said. "When you have two national champions competing against each other, that's pretty intense."

Going into the championships, Pratt was 1/4 inch behind Oregon's Thomas Skipper. The pair pushed each other to greater heights and each cleared a final height of 18 feet 6.5 inches, but Skipper cleared in less attempts than Pratt to earn the national title. Their height was Pratt's NCAA personal best.

Pratt is the reigning outdoor national champion and took sixth at these championships last year. He was recently crowned as the Mountain West Conference Indoor Champion. His current personal best is 18 feet 8.5 inches, which was set earlier this season at a non-NCAA sanctioned meet.

Mondschein Finishes 13th At NCAAs
Senior clears 5.20m

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday afternoon, Virginia Tech senior Brian Mondschein finished 13th in the pole vault.


Mondschein vaulted 5.20m (17'0.25") on his first attempt of the competition. However, he was unable to clear the next height, which was 5.35m (17'6.50").


"Brian has been pretty consistent all year," Director of Track and Field Dave Cianelli said. "He had some technical problems on the approach tonight."


Heading into the event, Mondschein had cleared a personal-best height of 5.52m (18'1.25"), which was the third best in the NCAA this season.


Last season Mondschein finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a vault of 5.40m (17'8.50"), earning his first All-America honor. In addition to being an All-American last year, Mondschein was All-ACC the last two indoor seasons and won the event at the ACC Championship in 2005.

Skipper vaults back into dominance

Tommy Skipper continued his return to the track elite last weekend, defending his pole vault title at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas.

Oregon track and field completed its indoor portion of the season and now starts outdoor events with the Oregon Preview Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Hayward Field.

The men’s team finished sixth with 23 points and earned its third top-10 finish since 2002.

The women’s team tied for 23rd with 10 points.

Skipper highlighted the men’s side with his third consecutive top-two NCAA indoor performance Friday with a clearance of 18-6 1/2. He narrowly beat out BYU’s Robison Pratt, who matched Skipper’s clearance. Skipper did it in fewer attempts, earning him the title.

“The talent level at this meet seems to get better and better, so you always have to be at your best,â€Â

In addition to the pole vault, Pratt was also busy away from the track. On Sunday, he and his wife, the former Lisa Antonelli-who ran distance for BYU-spoke at a two-stake fireside in Arkansas. Youth and parents were invited.

Pole vault coach Larry Berryhill expected a large gathering for the meeting.

"We're going to have to use the overflow," Berryhill said.
