Vaulting to records
Senior Wildcat sets national mark with jump at annual triangular

Thirteen feet, 11 1/4 inches. For the uneducated, it’s the height of the largest sunflower ever grown in the state of Michigan.

By sheer coincidence, or perhaps fate, it’s also the height that senior Breanna Eveland cleared in the pole vault at the KSU-MU-KU Triangular in Lawrence last weekend to set a new meet record and tie the K-State record in the Sunflower State.

But enough about sunflowers. How about the fact that Eveland’s jump also tied her for the best in the nation so far this year?

“It’s a good feeling,â€Â

Eveland named top Big 12 athlete
Thursday, January 26, 2006

The Grand Rapids Press
Former East Kentwood all-state pole vaulter Breanna Eveland qualified for this spring's NCAA indoor track and field nationals for Kansas State University by winning the Arkansas Invitational on Jan. 13.

Eveland tied her career best with a vault of 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches.

For her efforts, Eveland was named the Big 12 Conference athlete of the week. It's the second time Eveland has gained the league's indoor honor to go along with being named the conference's weekly top outdoor athlete five times.

A senior, Eveland also jumped 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches at last year's NCAA indoor championships. She's now cleared 13 feet in eight of her last 11 competitions. Eveland was an indoor All-American a year ago.

Breanna’s performance in Lawrence, Kansas last weekend was simply awesome. This was a very small meet with only 6 in the competition. It seemed almost like a practice session where she just calmly took care of business, clearing 13-11.25. And she did not try any attempts at a higher height.

Great job, Brea. Can’t wait for the national meet in Fayetteville where you should have great crowd support helping you go well over 14 foot.
