Captain Molly Lederman '06, defending Ivy League indoor pole vault champion, picked up where she left off last season. She vaulted 3.81 meters, well ahead of teammate and second-place finisher Ashley Nolet '07 (3.35 meters).
Lederman said that she was impressed most of all by the freshmen?s composure in their debut performance.
"For the freshmen, considering it was their first meet, they did well," she said. "To be a freshman and do well right away is a great accomplishment."

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Florida State track and field team opened the season on a familiar note; redshirt senior Lacy Janson qualified for her fourth national championship in five seasons, winning the pole vault with an automatic qualifying height of 13'9.25" (4.20m) at the 2005 Clemson Opener in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday, December 3, 2005.
Janson (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) won the pole vault by over two feet and broke the Clemson Indoor Facility record held previously by Georgia's Fanni Juhasz at 4.10-meters. This marks the second consecutive season and third time overall, the All-American has qualified in her first meet of the year. Janson punched her ticket to nationals in her first competition in 2005 as well as during her rookie campaign. Rookie Tori Allen (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) finished just behind Janson in fourth in her first meet as a Seminole, vaulting 10'11.75" (3.35m).

Athlete of the Week
Austen C. Hannis
Sports Editor
The Etownian is tickled to name men's track and field sophomore pole-vaulter Kevin Clark as The Etownian Athlete of the Week.
Clark was a machine for the men's track and field team at the Dickinson College Holiday Meet as he pole-vaulted an Elizabethtown College Indoor program record and NCAA Championship provisional qualifier 16 feet. He also placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56 seconds.
The one affectionately known as Prince, holds both the indoor and outdoor records in pole vault with heights of 16 feet for indoor, previously 15 feet, and 15-6 for outdoor. He dominates the conference as a two-time All-MAC Championship First Team member. He also won both the indoor and outdoor pole vault last season. Clark earned a spot on the All-MAC Championship Second Team by finishing seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Congratulations, Prince, for smacking around the competition in the pole vault as a sophomore, for breaking your own school record more than once, for being able to fall 16 feet from the sky rather than 15-6 but predominantly for reaching the Holy Grail of all sports awards, The Etownian Athlete of the Week.

IRIS ROMAN: POLE VAULT – 3.30m
Practices have been a struggle as Iris has been battling some demons… the one’s that don’t let you get off the ground. Fortunately she scored a major victory as she soared to a solid early season opening height. If her other training is any indication, she’s never been readier to have a go at breaking her Queen’s record of 3.45m than this year. She’s fitter, stronger and faster than she’s ever been, once the technical stuff comes along she’ll be flying!!
HEATHER HUFFMAN: POLE VAULT – 2.85m, PB, #8 ALL TIME
Oh why, oh why can’t we get talented athletes like Heather to come out sooner in this event? Heather is a 4th year rookie learning the most difficult skill in track and field… she’s going to be done before she has enough time to fully realize her amazing potential. She barely missed 3.00m!!! Coach Stewart is confident that she’ll be over 3.00m faster than any other novice vaulter he has coached over the last 14-years, and he’s coached some good ones! While new to the team, Heather is already making an impact not only with a superb debut performance but also developing team chemistry… the tri-colour head ware the women vaulters donned after they were finished and the pom-poms were a nice touch! So how she even got head coach Torcolacci to don a blue wig…
