In the girls` meet, Scarborough and Thornton Academy figured to have a close meet, but Kat Rice of Thornton injured her ankle in a freak accident while warming up for her first event, the pole vault.

Rice crumbled to the floor, and it wasn`t immediately known if she sprained or broke her ankle, but the injury sidelined her for the meet. She was top seed in both the pole vault and the 800 meters, so her absence cost Thornton a possible 20 points. Rice also was entered in the 800 relay.

``It would have been an interesting meet with a healthy Rice,`` said Scarborough Coach Ron Kelly. ``It might have come down to the last relay. We`ll never know. We came to compete and we had some great performances from a lot of people. We knew we were capable of it.``

Other records were set by Colby Brooks of Edward Little in the 55 (6.61) and Steve Slovenski of Brunswick in the pole vault. Slovenski vaulted 14 feet, 1 inch for the record, then cleared 14-3.
