1st Attempt at 13 feet. It was my first day back to 6 lefts in a couple months as well. I was on a 14' 6'' 160 from about a 78 foot approach. Just wanted to see if you guys pick out anything I haven't already.

Re: 13 Feet!
In brief -three main problems. 2 FEET UNDER!! YOU 'LOSE' YOUR RIGHT LEG IMMEDIATELY AFTER TO. YOU FLEX AND PICK UP YOUR LEFT LEG EARLY. ALL MAJOR FAULTS WHICH - TOGETHER - WILL PREVENT YOU JUMPING MUCH HIGHER. Nothing that intelligent hard work wont cure.
Its what you learn after you know it all that counts. John Wooden

looks like a huge over stride.. all the way..
also looked like your grip was 13'?ish.. maximum 44 foot "MID" (6 steps from takeoff)
starting at 78' would put your strides over 6 feet long "before" the "MID" and you didn't "quicken" from thye "MID" in...
a "normal" stride for a 13 foot vaulter is 5-8 inches you hit 6 foot stides.. 4 inches x 6 = 2 feet under!!!
get on the track and fix the run...
use a 44 mid and runback from there.. mark the last 6 with cones 5-8 inches apart and plant into towel.. do this twice a week for speed work and pole carry/drop...
good luck

Re: 13 Feet!
Hi,
As mentioned, you're hugely under on the take-off.
When you get time in the off season you should really do jumps from 1, 2 and 3 lefts with a stiff pole. This will really help you get the feeling of the free take off which will allow you to work on a lot of your air work. You MUST be in the air before the pole hits the back of the box. You may not always achieve that but that is what you always have to aim for.
Being so far under you won't be able to do very much in the air since being under will put you out of position in the air to perform a decent swing. Swings on the high bar and strengthening the core will be much much much less effective (perhaps even negligible in efficacy) if you take off under, especially that far under. One of the biggest mistakes I see is to try and build core strength to fix a bad swing without fixing the take off spot (if you're under). I would contend that spending large amounts of time building core strength for the swing while not fixing the take off spot is a huge waste of time and energy. - just wanted to throw that in because I hear that so much.
All the best

Hard work is wasted energy if you don't work wisely!

Re: 13 Feet!
dj,
what do you mean a normal stride for a 13 foot vaulter is 5-8 inches?
and where do you get 4 inches x 6 is 2 feet under?

Re: 13 Feet!
hey young Starkey,
happy new year to you and the family..
i used my chart .. and actually if you use the stride length and frequency to jump 13 feet the strides need only be 5-6
thats a 43 "MID" minus an average 10 foot takeoff.. = 33 divided by 6 (strides) =5-6
point i was trying to make was he seemed to be over striding before the "MID" based on the start distance.. if he is already over striding but still hits a 43/44 "MID" there is a good chance he will continue to over stride... a 4" over stride for the last 6 would be 24"/2 feet.. under.
i know the stride lengths have been 'questioned" from my chart but when you do look at the science from McGinnis etc.. even on your dad, Bubka and Hysong.. and do the math the step lengths they give for the last 10 meters can only be mathematically worked back to a 56-57 “MID” for Bubka and others. Back in the day Lawrence was the first I saw that hit 58 and would still power in, reach under and go for it.
Over recent years I have seen some men out there.. 58 plus.. and women with a 50 and jumping 15… but they are over striding and don’t have the speed (frequency) that should go with the length. They still make it work and jump 5.80. but they are also the ones that can’t copy the Petrov model no mater how hard they try.. they have a lower center of mass at takeoff… typically reach under.. use a “stiff” left arm and tuck to catch back up with the pole.
hope your jumping is going well..

Re: 13 Feet!
My take off was around 10 feet according to Jill. She didn't tell me on this exact jump but on earlier jumps thatday that is what she said! And I was thinking about it after the meet, the front of the runway bunched up and we pulled it all back after I was done jumping. Which means my run was actually around 76-77 feet. It's obvious I was under on the video, but I don't think I was 2 feet under!

Re: 13 Feet!
i think a foot farther out would suffice
Re: 13 Feet!
good morning,
i don't think you were that far under either...
and you may not have to move your run.. maybe a little in to keep from stretching.
i would check the "MID".. do approach runs on the track .. planting into a towel
then on the runway hit the correct "MID" for you, your speed and grip and try and "get the feet down" into an early plant.
that should keep you on the right track, faster, better posture, better takeoff and more consistant and agressive..
