How to put a box in a Basketball Court

Unread postby repmujhgih » Wed May 19, 2010 9:38 pm

Question. We are lacking in facility space, so the next best thing is to add a box into the floor of our basketball court. I was wanting to know if anyone has this in their own facility they could send pictures of, or some advice of how to do it.

Thanks for all the help.

I know this was done in a high school where a club I jumped with worked out. The floor was a hardwood basketball floor. This one was built on top of a concrete subfloor. They built a box into a wooden rectangular frame. They cut out a rectangle of the hardwood the size of the box frame. They built some support points so that either the box in the frame, or a rectangle of hardwood could be set in place. It worked very well except it was rather heavy to lift each in and out of the floor.

If I recall, the concrete subfloor required some chiseling out to allow the depth of the box to fit down into the concrete. Also, this was not in the main section of the gymnasium, but rather on a "side court". I probably could get some info from people who know more about how it was done if that was important. There may even be some photos of it. The club doesn't jump there anymore however.

We have one at the high school. It sounds like the same setup described above. The cover is very heavy and hard to remove but we use it every day from March to mid April here in Minnesota. The box itself is 2" below the wood floor. We also put a rubber runway down so we can use spikes.

At Marquette University we have one in our floor. They pretty much cut out the hard wood floor, then cut out some of the concrete. The box is removable, when we aren't vaulting we just put the piece of hardwood floor back in.

Marquette Facilities Services did the project so contacting them my be your best bet.
