if you are figuring out a college gpa, here's how we did it:
using the scale above, take your grade for each class and multiply by the number of credit hours for the class. Then, add up all the numbers, then divide by the total number of credits for that semester/quarter/whatever. That gives you your gpa.
here's an example:
MA 202 = 5cr x 4 (A) = 20
ENG 103 = 4cr x 4 (A) = 16
CHM 101 = 3cr x 3 (B) = 9
PE 202 = 3cr x 4 (A) = 12
20+16+9+12 = 57 grade points
5+4+3+3 = 15 credits
57/15 = 3.8 GPA

if u have honors or ap thats weighed, then its the grade +1 point
im not sure if sports count toward ur gpa tho...
Weighted GPAs are BS. I hate it when I see kids who say they have a 4.2 GPA.
And no sports do not count toward your GPA! Not unless you are somehow getting class credit for your participation.

so you think its fair to see a kid with a say, 3.7 whose taking classes that just simply pad their GPA so are getting As, and a kid with a 3.1 whos taking challenging classes, and getting Bs in them simply because they're harder? yeah sometimes you get the kids that pull off As in the weighted classes, but they're taking the weighted classes because they want a challenge, and the normal classes bore them to death

I understand the problem of kids taking easy classes and getting a good GPA. I took several AP and honors classes in high school, and my GPA was not outstanding. But different schools weight classes different ways, and assign weight to classes that might not deserve it. It makes it hard to say what a GPA means.
Anyway I think most colleges recalculate GPAs themselves when you apply. I think when I applied to UF, they only looked at my core classes (like not PE classes or other electives like that), and they added a half point to honors classes and a whole point to AP classes.

i agree that some classes that are "honors" don't really deserve the honors point, because the class isn't that challenging...although who knows, i wouldn't know what the normal class is like, so maybe it is a challenge compared to the normal one lol...but then there are some classes that deserve MORE than one point...damn, i had a class like that last year, hardest class i ever had. but i loved it, because my teacher forced me to try a lot harder. my writing improved SO much (odd, considering it was a social studies class)...
