Signs of support will be available next week for Fredonia native Jenn Stuczynski, who will be representing the United States in the pole vault in Beijing where the Olympics are scheduled to begin Aug. 8.
Stuczynski is only the second woman in the world to clear the 16-foot mark in the sport's history while holding all of the American records and one world record.
Stuczynski is Fredonia's first Olympic athlete, and only the second in Chautauqua County history. According to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame's Web site, Jimmy Clark of Jamestown represented the U.S. in boxing during the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. He did did not earn a medal, however, as he lost a controversial decision to a Polish fighter in the quarter finals. Clark was born in Virginia but moved to Chautauqua County in the early 1930s, before he participated in the Olympics.
The first element of the community's celebration of Stuczynski's accomplishments will be the sale of political-style signs that people can post on their property. The signs are red, white and blue and includes the words: "Fredonia's US Olympian Jenn Stuczynski 2008." Also available are posters of Stuczynski's action during a track and field competition. Signs and posters will be sold separately or as a set.

Fredonia rallies around Olympian, raising money to send family to Beijing

Signs supporting Fredonia native Jenn Stuczynski, a member of the Olympic U.S Track and Field team, are now on sale at various locations in the Chautauqua County area for $15 each.
A meeting of nearly 30 enthusiastic fans of Stuczynski was held Monday night in Fredonia Village Hall. The fans said they are more than willing to go out to sell signs to help defray the costs of the Stuczynski family's travel to China to see their daughter compete.
Stuczynski is the second person ever from Chautauqua County to gain a spot on an Olympic team. She is the second woman in the world to clear 16 feet in the pole vault. She broke her own American record recently by clearing 16-feet, 1 3/4 inches.
The first Olympian from Chautauqua County was Jimmy Clark of Jamestown who was on the U.S. boxing team in 1936 when the games were held in Berlin, Germany. He did not bring home a medal.
Signs will be on sale starting this week at these Fredonia locations: Village Hall, Fredonia Hardware, Bahgat & Laurito-Bahgat Accountants, and Dr. Mark Twichell's dental office. They also will be available at Niebel Real Estate in Sheridan, P&G Foods in Dunkirk, the Boardwalk Cafe in Dunkirk and the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena in Jamestown.
This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the signs will be sold outside Wal-Mart, Route 60, Dunkirk. Signs also will be sold via the Chautauqua County Fair information booth this week. All purchased signs may be erected immediately but must be taken down by Oct. 3.
If individuals wish to make a donation to the effort, they also may do so by making checks payable to Fredonia Olympic Celebration and sending them to: Fredonia Olympic Celebration, c/o Lake Shore Savings Bank, 30 E. Main St., Fredonia, NY 14063.
There will be a torch run in Fredonia Aug. 8 to honor Stuczynski on the day the Olympics begin in Beijing. Members of the Fredonia High School cross-country team will carry the torch to Barker Common. The torches to be used were actually carried in the official Olympic torch run through Fredonia in 1996. The torches are owned by Bob Dilks of Cassadaga and Kate Leary of Fredonia, both of whom participated in that Olympic run through Fredonia.
The Aug. 8 run will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Stuczynskis' Fredonia home, then travel down Central Avenue and Temple Street downtown to Barker Common. A public ceremony of celebration will be held at the gazebo to formally send the Stuczynski family off to China to cheer on their talented daughter. Individuals attending the downtown event are asked to wear red, white and blue clothing.
For more information, contact Village Trustee Gary Damico, P&G Foods, 366-2611; or Fredonia Mayor Michael Sullivan, 673-9595 or 679-2301.

Fredonia plans festivities to support pole vaulter
Updated: 08/05/08 6:47 AM
FREDONIA— When the signs and T-shirts supporting U. S. Olympic track and field team member Jenn Stuczynski of Fredonia sell out, no more will be ordered, it was learned at Monday night’s Fredonia Olympic Celebration Committee meeting in Village Hall.
The committee said it felt it has accomplished both a very successful grass-roots effort and its goal to defray the costs of the Stuczynski family’s trip to the Olympics in China to see their daughter, Jenn, compete in the pole vault. Stuczynski’s will compete Aug. 18.
The Olympics Games begin Friday, the day the Fredonia community will hold a celebration in Barker Common to support Stuczynski. Monetary check presentations will be made to the Stuczynski family by the Fredonia community and officials from Roberts Wesleyan College, where Stuczynski graduated in 2004. A torch run into Barker Common starts at 6:30 p. m., followed by a 7 p. m. program. There will be free food, as well as music by the Buccaneers, the Fredonia High School marching band. The rest of the Jenn Stuczynski signs and T-shirts will be sold.
Tonight, in a separate event in Barker Common, Jenn Stuczynski will be present at the police-sponsored National Night Out. Being on a tight pre-Olympic Game schedule, she will only be there from 7 to 8 p. m. to sign photos.
