Viruses And The Like

Unread postby rainbowgirl28 » Wed Aug 13, 2003 11:15 pm

Sorry the site was down for at least part of the day... I haven't talked to Nick yet, but it looks like the whole server was knocked offline. He is on vacation and probably was not able to respond as quickly as normal.

I don't know why it went down, but maybe it had something to do with that virus going around... if you are running Windows, make sure you have downloaded the latest patches... and read this stuff http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default. ... s_k=100547

Boy it sure is nice to be a Mac user

Macs are just plain annoying though!!

But yea, I got some sort of virus on my other computer, the one I want to be on!! *sobbs*

Anyways, yea, that one is down and I still don't know the cause of it, and I"m waiting for Alienware to e-mail me back with their tech support towards this issue...

Were you getting an RPC error and you're PC kept restarting? If so that's the annoying blast worm.

I ENTIRELy agree with becca, lol, macs are faster, more reliable and need i say VIRUS FREE....
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

Talent in cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.

More fast and more reliable? not always... This system I'm on can beat the G4 hands down...and my newer one is a very good rival to the G5....

Reliable, I could agree with that, but that is really only because you get your base system and then that's it....no upgrades or anything...you just toss your old system away and get a new one, that's it... We can upgrade these to last a much longer time, considering the hardwares are compatible with each other, which is usually not too much of a problem as long as your processor speed is decent enough...

[geek mode on]

macs only suck to the people who don't know how to use them.....

OSX is VERY slick and easy to use. only a true moron would find it hard to use. Plus, its based on BSD  so it has my vote

you don't see any Mac users worrying about the Blaster worm(or us Linux users either)

the G4 processors(and the G5's) are 64bit CPUs, compared to the 32bit intel chips, so it can process 2x more data at the same time. True, intel has faster clock speeds, but apple has more power, hence a "faster" computer

and why do you need a system that's easy to use? seriously...

I was thinking about getting Linux, but then I would probably have problems connecting to the net that is used at WSC since that's where I'm heading...

Plus I have a lot of software that I fear would not be compatible with it...

i personally don't need one, but most folks don't have the patience(or the intelligence) for anything outside of point and click, drag and drop

I've never had a problem connecting to the net anywhere. You're probably right on the incompatible software part, but you'd be surprised at what you can do with Linux. You may be abel to run some of that software on linux. I run MS Office and Internet Explorer on Linux, and there are more than enough comparable application to match whatever software you currently have. If you ever have an linux questions, don't be afraid to ask.......

Heh...how is the mac "faster" when intel's systems have higher clock speeds and better at handling the data flow? it all comes down to the Clock speeds in the end...explain this... :p

Will do :)

All the clock speed is is a measure of how many "cycles" a CPU can perform in a given amount of time. 2.2GHz = 2.2 billion cycles per second. A 32bit processor can only process 32bits of data at any given time. The 64bit CPU can process twice as much in the same amount of time. Its all about how much data you can process in a given amount of time rather than how fast it is being processed.

Imagine you have 10 gallons of water that you need to move up a hill. If you use a one gallon bucket to move the water, it takes you 10 trips. If you use 2 one gallon buckets, it takes you 5 trips. Lets say you can walk 3.0 meters per second holding one bucket, but only 2.2 meters per second holding 2. You'd still move the water faster using 2 buckets instead of one.

Its a matter of how much you can process in a given amount of time rather than how fast you are processing it

With a 3.2Ghz P4, your processor runs faster, but with the 2.2Ghz G5, your entire PC will run faster.

Just because your car's engine runs at a higher RPM than mine does, it means squat if i get to the finish line before you do.....
