The road to the National Championships does not run through the Krispy Kreme.

broken pole injuries
I expert witnessed an accidnet case n the late 80's where a college vaulter, jumping long run, on a pole 10 pounds under his body weight, broke the pole and landed on his head in the middle of the pit. He broke two of the vertabre in his neck and had to wear a hallow for immobilization for approximalty 6 months. He eventually fully recovered. He sued the school where the accident took place, and his college, and the manufacture of the pit , and the pole manufacture. He was awarded $90,000 in claims which the defendants divided equally.

My only break was stupid on my part, it was one of those bad days that got worse and worse. I went down a pole planted high and pulled down will all my might. The 15' pole broke in two and the but plug flew about 70 meters away, the top of the pole hit my head and the bottom luckly missed me. Which granted me a very nice concusionand some video footage to boot, which I have on my computer (mpeg), very nice. No gashes or major swelling though.
ahh San Diego: women, sun , beaches, pole vault, what else do you need.

If I remember correctly, that was one of my poles you broke.

I found a picture the other day of us from when we drove to Jan's camp in FL a few years back. You, Chase Shealy, Spencer Stephens, Mark Johnson (no relation to JJ), Jan Johnson, Coach Tche, me and maybe a few others. If I can locate it again I'll post it on our website www.CarolinaExtreme.com for you.

breaking poles...and the HS rules
Well breaking poles is never any good. Its expensive and dangerous. A few years ago the pole manufactures were all for the max weight and grip rules, that the HS Federation brought in. They thought it would help eliminate pole breakage and lower handholds...thus making the sport safer. However, it has kind of back-fired on them. Instead they have created a world where coaches and athletes feel obligated to cheat, in order to accomplish what they beleive a successful jump should look like.
In addition, it has left the manufactures in disaray regarding weight value assingments.
In fact, if some of the members at the HS federation had their way we would simply decrease the max weight on all poles by 10 pounds. This of course would utterly change the entire sport of HS pole vaulting to much lower grips and much smaller bends.
Opinions ladies and gentleman?
