The men’s pole vault came down to three competitors on the final height. Based on the number of misses tiebreaker, Monmouth (Ill.) senior Jonny Henkins grabbed the title at the the NCAA III Track & Field Championships at the ONU Sportscenter. His winning height was 16-9.5.
North Central sophomore Jake Windler placed second and Loras junior Kyle Calvert placed third as they both cleared 16-9.5 as well.
“This is awesome. I can’t believe that I’m a National Champion. Last year at outdoor nationals I fell in my warm-up jumps, hurt myself and was unable to compete. I felt that I had to show everyone this time that I had what it takes to be on top. This is my second time being an All-American. Winning this as a senior is how everyone would like to finish it off." -- Johnny Henkins, Monmouth (Ill.)The tiebreaker for pole vault goes back to each previous height and the number of misses at each height. Henkins and Windler both cleared the previous height without any misses while Calvert missed twice. The tiebreaker then went to the previous height where Henkins again cleared on his first attempt while it took Winder his second time to clear.
The defending indoor champion Kevin Clark, a senior from Elizabethtown, placed fourth (16-5.5) while the defending outdoor champion Peter Sprecher, a senior from Monmouth, placed fifth (16-5.5).
Sixth place went to Wisconson Platteville junior Scott Howard (16-1.75) and seventh place went to Wisconson Stevens Point sophomore Mark Cufaude. The final All-American spot and eighth-place went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology senior Omari Stephens.
