Matti Mononen placed fourth in the Pole Vault in Gothenburg and was so disappointed in himself that he went to train immediately after the Gothenburg final. That session in the weight lifting room was so hard that Matti was not very flexible in Lahti. He failed three times on his opening height 5.50.
Richard Spiegelburg of Germany cleared 5.58 on his second jump, which was enough for the victory in a windy evening with some rain showers.
