It's hard to believe that a pair of spikes is less dangerous than a tube of toothpaste!

There must be some limit to the length of the spikes, or how sharp they can be?

My wife works as security officer at airport and she said that she will not let you in with spikes. There is no specific rule for spikes, so it is discretion of screener to allows or deny. You can always ask to talk with supervisor and (maybe) get permission, but if you want to avoid any problem and delay don't carry them on board. Skates, for example are forbidden.

You can always remove the little metal spikes and put them in your checked baggage but still carry the shoes on.

This is what I do now. I've been stopped and searched for carrying the replacement spikes in a little bag in my carry on before. They look too much like bullets I guess.

The first leg of the flight is a "puddle-jumper" where everything has to be put under the plane at the jetway, so maybe we can pack them in a roll-aboard, let them put them below, and get it back for the second leg.

Of course, a better way would probably be to put a set of replacement spikes in every checked bag, and hope that at least one set of them gets there.

Yes, they look very suspicious in the little bag.
I shouldn't tell you this, but... : if you have no checking baggage don't remove spikes from shoes. If they stop you, tell them that spikes are fixed (not removable). Technically, if they are fixed they can go in cabin. Of course, there is no 100% guarantee for that.

Spikes on a Plane - sounds like a really bad movie title.

We have never had problems with spikes (1/4 inch). Aerosol based "Firm Grip" is another story. Was somehow able to get it to Reno without detection. They were not so accommodating on the trip home .

I got stopped once and had to take them out of the shoe and give them to the security guy. I do it different now and havent had any problems

For what it's worth, we took two pair of shoes with spikes in two separate carry-on bags on two separate outbound flights and one inbound flight, and we didn't have any trouble getting them through security. I also had (unintentionally) a bag of replacement spikes in the same carry-on bag, and they went through also, without a hitch.
