The highlight of the afternoon for a disappointingly sparse crowd at the Joao Havelange stadium came when Brazil's Fabiana Murer won the women's pole vault with a clearance at 4.60 metres.

Dana Ellis-Buller of Kitchener, Ont., made an early exit from the women's pole vault after missing her first three attempts at 4.20 metres.
"It happened so fast," said Ellis-Buller, who holds the Canadian record of 4.51 metres. "The competition began and all of a sudden, I was out."

Murer wins tying gold for Brazil in pole vault at Pan Ams

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Fabiana Murer shattered the Pan American Games pole vault record by 20 centimeters on Monday and helped Brazil tie its record 29 gold medals from Santo Domingo four years ago.

In women's soccer, defending champ Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 and will play the United States in the final. The two nations also will decide the women's basketball tournament.

Murer, fourth in the world rankings, cleared 4.6 meters in three attempts, breaking the former record of 4.4 by American Melissa Mueller in 2003.

"It was wonderful," Murer said. "But I have to confess that I was a bit nervous when the competition started, but then I decided to start having fun and got the gold."

With the gold guaranteed, Murer attempted to surpass her personal best mark of 4.66, but failed to clear 4.68. American April Steiner matched the former Pan Ams record for silver, and Cuba's Yarisley Silva rose a personal-best 4.3.

With Murer's victory, Brazil matched its 2003 gold medal with six days left to surpass the mark.

The United States leads with 60 golds, and Cuba is second with 31. Canada trailed with 15.

Pole vaulter seeks own mark to win the Pan Am gold

Pole vaulter Fabiana Murer had to overcome her biggest adversary to win Brazil's first athletics gold medal at the XV Pan American Games -- that's herself.

When American April Steiner failed to vault the 4.55-meter high bar, Murer decided to take on the 4.60m. She succeeded in her attempt, breaking the Pan American record for women's pole vault, which stood at 4.40m.

But it was still not enough for the 26-year-old athlete, who wished to clear the 4.68m mark, up two centimeters from her own record. However, it was not the time yet to get closer to the world No. 1 Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, who holds the 5.01m mark. Murer currently occupies the fourth position in the ranking, following Poland's Monika Pyrek and another Russian, Svetlana Feofanova.

Her place on the top of the podium was guaranteed anyway, and she could hear the entire Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, recently inaugurated for the Pan Am Games, call her "champion".

The vaulter revealed that she felt "very nervous" in the beginning of the tournament, especially because she was competing at home, which demanded more concentration.

All the fans' yelling to motivate her could have in fact harmed her performance, she pointed out. But she admitted that the participation of the public ended up helping her win the medal, as she believes that the boos did affect her adversaries.

"I do not like this boo thing very much, but that is the fans' way, isn't it?" said Murer, who regarded the victory at the Games as "the season's beginning," as she is leaving for Europe to practice for the World Championship, which will take place in a month's time in Osaka, Japan.
