Bubka broke several poles

Unread postby Bruce Caldwell » Sun Mar 25, 2007 3:30 pm

Bubka broke several poles
When he switched from Pacer to Nordic the poles broke as these experimental CARBON poles had 26" of spiral carbon in the butt of the pole. The pole was stiffer in the butt and had a very high bend to them and vaulters the World over loved how the poles popped them over the bar! But the poles seem to have only 20 -25 jump expiration as the energy failed right at the point where the 26" ended and the other Glass could not hold the load.
He then went to Spirit to have his poles made as the engineers of Pacer moved to Spirit and Knew what he needed.
He has been on UCS/Spirits ever since.

I hate to hear or see any pole break no matter the brand.
But poles break especially if vaulters and officals do not take care of them. I see many videos on this site show vaults where the pole is not caught and hits the standard , the box top, the runway, etc.

it really pisses me off when the officials tell us we cant have someone standing near the pit, and then they don't catch the poles. very frustrating

In some of the old videos, you can see that he has jumped on Nordics.

The only time Bubka did not jump on poles made by Steve Chappell (the Pacer brand originally till they were bought by Gill - and then Spirit when UCS provided him with a new factory in Carson City, where he wanted to remain ) was when Sergey was 'induced' to try the new Nordic carbons - which had the problems essex alluded to.

However Nordic have moved on and I suspect that their present poles are as consistent and long lasting as any in the market.

I was told once that Bubka broke a pole in warmups, got flustered for whatever reason, and decided to scratch. The meet promoter, in an effort to keep one of the main stars in the competition, bought him a car to stay in the competition.

That sounds kind of scetchy there. I don't know about that one.
