That could be confusing for some readers - even tho it is true that with the free take off you do not try to bend the pole before you leave the ground and the bend does indeed come when you are whip swinging on the pole. But the bend comes from a combination of the forces applied at take off and those in the second phase, the whip swing--- not merely from the latter.

In my book and my coaching
We talk about how each phase is interdependent on each other. The run into the plant and the plant into the take off and the take off into the swing. Power from the take-off is stored into the swing rather than the pole. Which implies that we are not suggesting a flat or leapless take-off which cannot transfer energy efficiently.
Leaping into the swing and swinging into the swing-back is what bends the pole.
A free take-off in my opinion is one without the resistance of the pole to kill the swing or reduce energy transfer.
A free-take-off is one that is with power of the run blended to an angle that stores energy in to the vault or the swing. That energy is then transfered to the pole. Yes the pole will bend at take-off some what however moving with the vaulter upward.
