I don't get Walker passing now.
You are not the only one confused....
IMO, a strategic error. I bet it was some kind of testosterone manifestation towards Hooker......

Brad would have gained nothing by jumping at 5.90m since Lukyanenko cleared it before he did. Brad MUST make it in order to tie since both men had one previous miss. If he passes to 5.95m, Lukyanenko had to take his attempt first, which he missed, which gave Brad the opportunity to take the lead if he cleared on his first. I see it as Brad minimizing the numbers of jumps he has to take to win.

Brad cleared 585 in first attempt while Lukyanenko used 2 attempts. IOW, had Brad made an attempt on 590 and cleared, would he have remained in lead. Not sure what the cronological order of those 2 were (I seem to recall that I heard Walker had skipped 590 before I saw Lukyanenko jump 590). Had Walker failed 590 first attempt would he still have 2 attempts on 595 to regain lead.
IMHO, a tactical blunder...
FWIW, Brad stated afterwards that he didn't know how his legs would react jumping two days in a row and was trying to minimize vaults. The best scenario for clearing 5.90 would have been a tie for first resulting in a jump off. If you're fatigued, going to a jump off probably isn't as good an idea as going for the win at the next height.

That's what I'd been thinking when I originally said I didn't understand him passing, but I think I've figured it out. I imagine someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, Brad was ahead of Evgeniy at 5.85 on the basis of having cleared it first. And if neither had cleared another height, he'd have won. But once Lukyanenko cleared 5.90 on his first attempt, the fact that Walker had been first over 5.85 was no longer significant. Had Walker jumped 5.90 and cleared it on his first attempt, the only significance of the earlier jumps is the number of misses, and here they'd still be tied with one apiece. So by passing 5.90, he avoided wasting energy at a height that could only leave him tied at the top, and instead put it all into going for the win.
