If you don't want to do towels, invest in some rock climbing straps(you can get them at an outdoor supply store) and have them sown together. Then you don't have as much bulk under the hood and the straps are super strong. I have to use straps because towels are too bulky and my hood wouldn't shut all the way...it was bad for the hood latch after a while

My coach used to tie them onto the side of his truck. He would put the poles int their case along side the passenger side, tie the front to his mirrors and the back into the holes along the top of the sides of the bed. actually i think he used bungees.
This year your gonna have to work twice as hard.

Window Clipon
I just bought a ski rack system that attaches to the window (There are two pieces for two windows). The poles are held in place with rubber straps (meant for skis). It's a great system, easy to use and setup and cheap ($50)

A guy who used to vault with us used indestructo's method, folded down seats and out the boot. But he didnt have the pole in a tube, just a bag.
I think the slight compression and vibrations of the boot door caused a weakness in the pole cause he snapped it. It didnt shatter, just two pieces with an almost clean cut through them, it looked liek someone had been at it with a hacksaw it was that clean.
Just my experience and why id never stick them out the boot.

Aim high, then at least if you miss you won't shoot yourself in the foot.
