I actually used to have a couple beers the night before competitions my last year in school. I always used to get so fired up about jumping the next day that I couldn't sleep and would be tired the next morning from not getting enough sleep. I started knocking back a couple of nice, dark beers to relax and make myself sleepy. The trick is to drink at a leisurely pace in a quiet setting. No parties! As soon as you start feeling a little tired, finish you beer, go drink a couple big glasses of water, empty your bladder, then hit the sack. Solid 8-10 hours guaranteed.
