Anchoring standards

I coach at a high school that is currnetly getting a new track put in and after years of suffering with a pretty bad vault area I managed to get a great new vault area put in. Unfortunitley, as I have been looking around the internet, I have been unable to find what the placement should be for the settings for anchoring the standards to the ground. I would prefer to get these in during construction but unfortunitley will be unable to be around the track because I will be at college. from what I can tell most if not all standards use the same settings. Please let me know if you know any of the dimensions so I can pass them on. Thank you

Setting the standards will depend on the standards you have purchased. I don't think there are any uniform position of anchor points for standards. However, take a look at this Gill Athleticsweb site. Click on "pole vault landing system". That page will let you view pdf document layouts of various pits they sell. Unfortunately, these will only help if you have their pits and standards. However it will give you a sample drawing from which you can add your particular dimensions when you figure them out. You can also click on "vault boxes" and then select a particular box. You will be shown a dimensioned drawing of the box and an appropriate way for the box to be set.

If you have a 2005 NFHS Track and Field Rules book, look at Section 5 which starts on page 56. Take particular note of Rule 7-5 Art. 11 which defines the min and max width between the pins that support the crossbar. When I set our standards, I used 14' 2" which is midway between min and max. These are centered on the planting box which should be centered on the runway. The postion of the standards fore and aft (in the direction the runway goes) is such that the adjustment of the standards will allow a crossbar to be positioned anywhere from 40cm to 80 cm behind (toward the pit) the top of the stopboard of the box. This can be seen on Diagram C on page 57 and written in Art 19. If you have standards that have a full 80cm of adjustment, then it would be very useful to place them so when they are adjusted all the way forward (toward the runway), then the crossbar would be directly above the top of the stopboard of the box. This is the position from which a crossbar height is most easily measured. If your standard bases have permanently marked dimensions to indicate the postion of the adjustment, then the standards should be placed such that these numbers will accurately represent the location of the crossbar as measured from the top of the stopboard of the box.
