Yep, It's not too bad if you land feet first.

My teammate at Lindenwood is the Guatemalan record holder, and I think things have improved a bit since then ;)

I'm sure it was better even then. We were up in one of the villages, and I built that pit myself, so no offense intended. :o I'll change my post to:

Worst Place to Pole Vault Ever -

My own pit in a village in Guatemala!

That pit is also way better than the first one I built for myself in Apache Oklahoma which was made out of straw. I should start a business: McMichael Organic Pit Design.

I’ll also say this. If you made a sawdust pit about five times bigger than the one in the picture it would be safe for a 20’ foot vault. It really isn’t a bad place to land.

I jumped into a sawdust-over-old-tires (not inner tubes) pit at a dual meet hosted by Shawano (WI) High School in 1967 and I agree with Tim that it wasn't that bad. In fact, it was much better than a couple of the Cloud 9 inflatable pits that I landed on (or was launched from) in that era.
May the Force be with you!

what was your PR on that pit?

I made 15' on that pit, but I landed flat on my back on that jump and it knocked the wind out of me and some sense into me. I did not try a bar that high on it again. 14' or lower was no problem.
