plant box installation questions

Unread postby mjaubbs40 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 12:14 pm

Please let me know who I could talk to about looking for some ideas & feedback for these two scenarios:

1. What is the best way to put a plant box in the concrete floor of my garage? Perhaps jackhammer to "dig" a hole for the box & then what?

2. What is the best way to install a runway/plant box from scratch outside? Have a company lay asphalt & then install box?

Mike, Mine works just fine and I've just got it planted in the dirt. It doesn't move and if I want to lift it out it comes right out. As you saw with my set up, I had to move the pit to the left 18" and back 2 feet. Wasn't a problem at all. I just dug a new hole and stuck it in. Later......Mike

Hey Mike. That's what I've got right now too and you're right, it works just fine. But I will be installing a box in an ashpalt runway in the next few months at the new house, as well as putting one in my garage and am looking for the best way to do it. I'm not sure who to contact (Gill Athletics maybe?) about doing it or learning how to do it myself.

You're right on the money. Go to this link, and then select the type of box you have. The pdf document shows all the details to set a box professionally.

As for putting the box in the garage floor, I would rent a concrete saw and cut the floor in a rectangle that is 6 inches wider and longer per side than the box. You can use mortar mix to fill in around the box instead of concrete mix because the mortar is easier to tear out later if needed.
As for the asphalt runway, I would form up the box area just like above and place in mortar and then place the asphalt. The trick is to place the box at the right height so the paving is flush with the top.I would not try to abrasive saw a hole in the asphalt as it tends to lift and curl near the cut leaving you with potential for a ridge or lip in front of the box.
The Gill website shows crossectional views of how to install a box.

I'm glad someone asked this question. I have been wondering just what a PV box would be used for in a garage! Maybe this is a "Texas" size garage or something. ;)

15' high and 25' w x 25' l. We're going to insulate & drywall--not a bad little space. Way too small to jump, but perfect for takeoff/plant drills and push ins, gymnastics, plyos, watching film and other drills.
We're putting in gymnastics rings, pull up bar and possibly a swing invert device to supplement bad weather practices. Any other suggestions for PV tools/drills in that space?

Those are just what I needed. Now I just need to put that Phys. Ed degree with a minor in masonry construction :) to use. :dazed: :crying:
