OK -agree - a great prospect - the key is the javelin because as you know many girls - even good athletes - cannot throw! 40 plus is a very good start .
Other good signs are the hurdles, which confirm her high levels of coordination and the 800 which is an excellent time for a big girl who may not have done much specific training for that event. The shot performance indicates the basic power she has and again will improve quickly with improvements in technique - which should be kept at a basic level.

Long jump and high jump are relatively weak at present - by world class heptathlon standards - but will respond quickly to basic training regimes as will the 200. The first two are especially important because they are such potentially high scoring events where the natural athleticism of the athlete must not be hampered by fundamentally poor techniques.

Have not coached a multi eventer for over ten years so it will be quite exciting to follow her progress!

Thanks Becca, I will get her entered right away. One of our main problems is funding, but by then we might have the cash on hand to go.

BTW she just long jumped 20' 4" from a 20 step approach and threw the shot 41'. :dazed: I am so excited about taking her to a track meet that I can hardly stand it. :D

She's sickly athletic Tim. I was curious to see what her marks would score, so in case you haven't already done so I metricized them and put them into a CE calc:

100mH 13.38 1068
HJ 1.75m 916
SP 12.34m 684
200m 24.40 943
LJ 6.25m 927
JT 41.1m 688
800m 2:17.11 863

Total Score: 6089

http://www.usatf.org/statistics/calcula ... tsScoring/

Keep in mind it's a tall order to hit all your PBs all in one weekend, though easier to do in hep than dec. That said, she has room to improve technically across the board so her I think she her athleticism is sufficient to take her to the world level. I agree with Alan about her hurdle time--over 1000 pts is a very good sign. It's also a good sign that she's not afraid to run. Sub-2:20 in the 8 is very good for a powerfully built athlete like her.

Between her coordination and power she can get a lot more out of her jumps, and with your PV background I'm sure you can take her there fairly quickly. My only concern would be throwing. CE tables are designed in a way that is meant to equalize events, in terms of points, at a global level. Decathletes and heptathletes have to be way smaller than world class throwers in order to be able to even finish a meet, so there is a natural bias against throws, which makes hers look not quite as bad. That said, a 12m shot is quite short for such a powerful athlete, but her Jav is a very, very good sign as that's the one event in the hep that can hold an athlete back from greatness.

Looks like you've got your hands full! I hope it works out for her in hep, but if it doesn't, as you're well aware she has a future in vault too. it's a damn shame that the women's decathlon hasn't caught on, but hopefully that will change.

Thanks for the advice on the hep. I am really out of my depth here. Do you think you could message me with some examples of workout plans?
We are doing pretty well right now, but my anxiety level is through the roof. I really want to do the best job I can for her. One of our most ambitious plans is to break the dec. world record this year. Her improvement in the pole vault just might get us there.

Basic weekly pattern......

Sunday - Vault

Monday - LJ approach runs and 4" box takeoff/land drill into the sand

Tuesday - HJ and weak technical event area
400m - 600m - 400m @ 1500 race pace

Wednesday - Hurdles - discus - pole vault in any order you choose

Thursday - Javelin & weak event area technical work.

Friday - Hurdles - SP - HJ

Sat.......RR

some of your speed work is with the hurdles and your plyo work is with the jumps.... you should lift once or twice a week...

does she have the luxury of tuesday/thusday morning workouts?

if so that’s a good time to lift and or focus on specific technique...

Hey Tim, shoot an email to Cliff Rovelto cliff@ksu.edu and Dan Pfaff (I don't have his email on me but if you email tigerbarsports@yahoo.com they can forward it to him) and ask them for advice.

Hope you are bringing her to Excelsior Springs in January!!
Apart from all of the other advice you are getting - you might consider work to improve her flat chat speed - as this will pay of in the heptathlon - 200/long jump and high jump - which are still relatively weak events in terms of the points she can get from even small improvements - and of course the vault.

Before we go too far down the track of planning a program we need to know - how much time does she have to train? Is she/will she be - a full time athlete as she prepares for the trials or is she working - or a student?? - what kind of work/ what kind of student - how important are the studies?? Percentage body fat? How much time can you give her? What can she do on her own? Facilities available -track/weights etc/ travel time to get there? Opportunities for restoration/recuperation? Date of most important heptathlon competition/ first competition in the season -heptathlon/any event?? Only once those questions are answered is it possible to determine your coaching priorities -long term/short term - and then to establish a program.

Tim one thing that is apparent in the video is that she is overstriding, and it seems to get progressive as she approaches the plant. She's probably way too far out on her start....

Thanks again for the help. You are absolutely right Alan. There are so many factors involved that have to be taken into account it is an almost impossible job. Coaching track has got to be one of the hardest coaching jobs around.

You guys don't know how much I appreciate the support and advice. Thanks. :star: :star: :star:
