Reno and the NCAA

A coach forwarded this to me from their compliance office. What do you all think?

Below is information related to the  2005   Pole Vault Summit as confirmed by our membership services contact person. Just wanted to share this information in case you receive similar inquiries.

Date of Event – January  21-22, 2005, Reno, Nevada

Website -  www.polevaultsummit.com

Expenses – Institutions may provide actual and necessary travel expenses to a student-athlete to participate in this event provided the student-athlete is competing during the institution’s declared playing and practice season and provided the team/individual date of competition is counted appropriately.

Skill Instruction – In previous years, a clinic was held in conjunction with the event which provided skill-instruction to the participants by outside consultants. Please be advised that if a student-athlete receives skill/coaching instruction from an outside consultant, then that individual would be required to count in the institution’s coaching limits per Bylaw 11.7.1.1.1.4. Additionally, it should be noted that a student-athlete could participate in a clinic provided he/she is competing in the Pole Vault Summit but could not participate and receive expenses for the clinic only.

Volunteer Coaches - The website states that the NCAA has granted a waiver for institutions "to pay for registration and expenses to the Pole Vault Summit for a volunteer coach". After consulting with Laura Wurtz and the NCAA membership services staff, such a waiver has in fact NOT been granted. So it would not be permissible for institutions to pay expenses for their volunteer coaches to attend this event.

well, i havent jumped in reno ever, and if i do i wont be jumping for a school. but i do suggest that everyone pay very close attention to the rules and make sure to follow them. luckily one of my coaches is very careful about rules, so my team doesnt really have problems with the ncaa, but last year a lot of triple jumpers in d3 got marks disallowed due to some pits not having enough sand in them and then couldnt go to nationals because of it.

so, knowing the rules and following them no matter how stupid they are will help you greatly. this, doesnt mean that it isnt still a good idea to work to change stupid rules though.

i bet most vaulters going to the summit were not aware of the second rule you posted and hopefully it doesnt mess up stuff for any schools

The college people at Reno don't do any clinics, they just get to sit in lectures.

That's funny about the triple jump thing. The triple jump pit at our indoor conference meet last year was significantly short on sand. Our guys had to make a board out of tape, because they would be jumping past the back of the pit on the real board
