Burgess breaks Aussie drought with pole vault win
Paul Burgess has become the first Australian athlete in 10 years to win a World Athletics Final title after taking out the pole vault at the Stuttgart meet overnight.

Burgess scored the biggest win of his career, clearing 5.82 metres on his first attempt to finish ahead of American Toby Stevenson and Germany's Tim Lobinger, who shared second place after vaulting 5.82 metres on their third attempts.

It is the first title win for an Australian at the meeting since Cathy Freeman took out the 400 metres event in 1996.

Another Australian, Steven Hooker, claimed fifth position after clearing 5.75 metres on his second attempt.
