WJR WPV Qualifying - T.Anthony through, Parker out

Unread postby rainbowgirl28 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 2:25 am

11 girls over 4.00 meters. Tori is going to have a very tough time cracking the medals. Parnov, Volik and Ryzih are probably the favorites.

Volik - qualfied

What for the spearmen what was a tricky headwind was a potentially even worse cross wind for the women’s pole vaulters in their qualification round at the opposite end of the stadium where they approached the uprights across the top of the infield jumping fan. Thankfully though the vaulters found themselves com competing near enough to a small spectator tribune to be largely sheltered from the wind by the stadium wall, and as such eleven of the twelve finalists for Friday’s final (18) made the automatic qualification of 4.00.

Of the finalists, Russia’s Valeriya Volik, 16, the World Youth record breaker, who is slated to be the next Isinbayeva, took her first three heights on the first try (3.80, 3.90, 3.95) and made 4.00m on her second approach. With a clean jumping card through four heights (3.60, 3.80, 3.95, 4.00), was the qualification leader Ling Li of China.

Parnov safely through to Pole Vault final

16 August 2006 | 1.59pm

IAAF World Junior Championships, Beijing China
Day Two – Morning Session Wrap

Highlights

Commonwealth Games representative Vicky Parnov (WA) qualified for the final of the women’s pole vault after clearing the automatic qualifying height of 4.00m. Parnov entered the competition at 3.90m with a first attempt clearance, before success at 4.00m on her second attempt. 2003 World Youth Championships bronze medalist Charmaine Lucock (QLD) began confidently with first attempt clearances at 3.80m and 3.90m before passing at 3.95m. Three misses at 4.00m left Lucock outside the qualifiers for the final, with eleven automatic qualifiers; a first attempt success at 3.95 was required for the last spot, meaning Lucock will not line-up with Parnov in Friday night’s final.

Volik no contest

Unread postby CLCPV04 » Thu Aug 17, 2006 9:43 pm

Hey guys

It was HOT for the qualifying rounds. The wind was not too bad. Slight head from time to time. What was killer was the heat. They went 10cm at a time until 3.95 which drove everyone batty since the auto into the final was 4.00.

Volik was the class of the field. Parnov, while impressive, is very young and had no where near the same height over 4.00 and 3.90 as Volik. I would say Volik is capable of 4.50 in today's finals.

Finals are today at 6pm local (6am EST)
