Lewis vaults to debut gold
20 July 2006
STEVE Lewis is still seeking to scale new heights despite winning the AAAs pole vault title at the Manchester Regional Arena on Saturday, writes LUKE WILSON.
The Newham & Essex Beagles star won a slightly disappointing event, comfortably seeing off the challenge of Birmingham's Scott Simpson to take his first senior national crown with his clearance of 5.40m.
Lewis, however, is still looking to reach the development standard of 5.55m which would guarantee his place in next month's European Championships in Gothenburg having failed at that height on three occasions in Manchester.
The 20-year-old remained philosophical about his chances of being on the flight to Sweden however.
"I'm pleased to have won in tricky conditions but I need to tighten a few things up if I'm going to get this 5.55 and get to the Europeans," he admitted.
"Let's hope I can find that little bit extra in the next few competitions."
