Roslinda's New National Mark Fails To Clinch A Medal
From Jaiarajo Letchumanan
MELBOURNE, March 25 (Bernama) -- Roslinda Samsu justified her selection for the Commonwealth Games here by setting a new national record in the women's pole vault at the Melbourne Cricket Ground Saturday night but the effort was not good for a medal.
Roslinda, who cleared 4.25m on her third attempt to eclipse her own national mark of 4.20m set in Spain last year, failed in her next three attempts when the bar was raised to 4.35m and was engaged in a three-way tie for the bronze.
The gold and silver had already been decided when Kym Howe set a new Games record with 4.62m, erasing fellow Aussie Tatiana Gregorieva's 4.35m mark set in Manchester four years ago. Gregorieva, who cleared 4.35m to equal her old mark, took the silver.
Roslinda, who had come to Melbourne after winning the event at the Manila SEA Games last year with a height of 4.10m, was engaged in a three-way tie for the bronze with two Canadians who had also cleared 4.25m.
However, Stephanie McCann, who had cleared 4.25m on her second attempt, was awarded the bronze on countback. The Malaysian and the other Canadian girl, Dana Ellis, were declared joint fourth.
Roslinda's failure meant athletics ended their campaign here with one national record and no medals.
