Field: Aussie vaulters dominant

Australians have filled the top three places in qualifying for the women's pole vault final at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Sydney Olympics silver medalist Tatiana Grigorieva, 2002 Commonwealth Games runner-up Kym Howe and 15-year-old Victoria Parnov all progressed to Saturday night's final with relative ease.

Howe, 25, was the top vaulter with a comfortable effort of 4.20 metres in her one and only attempt at the MCG on Thursday night, while Grigorieva and Parnov both cleared 4.10 metres.

Grigorieva, who won gold in Manchester four years ago but was unable to defend her Olympic gold at Athens 2004, missed with her first attempt at 4.10 metres but comfortably cleared the bar with her next attempt.

The crowd favourite was delighted with the support from the MCG fans.

"The crowd was absolutely fantastic, this crowd is beautiful," Grigorieva said.

"(I'm) very happy I'm in the final. All three of us are in, I'm so happy about that.

"I would just love to get a PB. I'm in good shape, I can do a little bit more."

Parnov - the niece of Grigorieva - was making her major international senior debut. The teenager cleared 4.00 metres on her second attempt and it seemed to be massive relief for her as she confidently cleared 4.10 metres with her next effort.

Parnov finished fourth in the pole vault at the 2005 World Youth Championships and is Australia's second youngest track and field athlete ever to compete at a Commonwealth Games.

Top qualifier Howe is in excellent form having cleared 4.61 metres in a personal best effort in Canberra in January.

New Zealand's Melina Hamilton was also one of the 12 qualifiers for the final after clearing 4.00 metres.

Kirsty Maguire, in intensive care for four days this month due to a peanut allergy, missed out on the pole vault final. "Everything that could have gone against me, went against me," she said tearfully after clearing 3.80 metres in qualifying. "I am just glad to have got the chance to compete."

Meanwhile, an old favourite was again wowing them. Tatiana Grigorieva, smouldering like the Tatiana of old, qualified for the final of the pole vault. The twist now was that she had brought along her niece, Vicky Parnov. Parnov, just 15, but already with the lean and leggy build of a jumper, also qualified, whereupon aunt and niece shared a moment. So did Kym Howe qualify, with only one jump. Each of these feats was worth an ear-splitting shout.
