Anna Rogowska of Poland raised her own national record in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80m [15-9] today at the European Indoor Cup in Lievin, France.

With her second attempt success, the 24-year-old, who leaped to a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, became only the fourth woman to better 4.80m indoors. She now trails only world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia (4.91m/16-1 1/4), Russian Svetlana Feofanova (4.85m/15-11) and American Stacy Dragila (4.81m/15-9 1/4) among performers all-time.

With Isinbayeva watching from the stands, Rogowska took three attempts at a world indoor record height of 4.92m [16-1 3/4]: two were run-throughs without a jump, while the third was half-hearted at best.

Both will compete at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow next weekend.

Aarg! Why couldn't Anna have jumped like this on Friday?!?

I noticed something the other day and spent about an hour yesterday collecting the statistics to back it up. Since the beginning of last year – since Feofanova and Dragilla ceased being serious rivals – Isinbaeva is 21 out of 25 for clearing the "next" height on her first attempt when the increment between heights is 10 cm or less. When it's more than 10 cm, she's only 3 of 16 on her first attempt. And when it's 20 cm or more, as it was Friday night, she's only 2 for 10 on her first attempt; 2 for 8 on her second; and 0 for 6 on her third!

I'm genuinely starting to wonder if Isi has only set one record since Helsinki because her opponents have been slacking off. If Rogowska had cleared 4.72 on Friday, then she, and presumably Isi, would have gone on to 4.77 at least, and maybe 4.82. If Isi had been forced into taking 4.82 before attempting the record at 4.92, I think she might have gotten it.

I have no idea what the rules say in these elite competitions. If you've already won the meet 20 cm below the WR, do you have to go immediately to the record height, or would you be allowed to attempt an intermediate height before going for the record? From the description I gather that Rogowska had already won today at 4.60, and went directly to 4.80, but I don't know if that was a personal decision, or something stipulated by the rules.

The meet winner can generally set the bar wherever they would like if they are the only vaulter remaining. There are no rules that say they have to attempt a record.
