CUTTS IN BID FOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
POLE vault sensation Luke Cutts leaps into a month of events this weekend that could catapult him into the national senior spotlight.
Cutts, who turns 18 next month, makes his bid for a place on the British team for the World Indoor Championships in Moscow in March.
The Norwich Union World Indoor Trials are being held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on the weekend of February 11 and 12.
Qualification for the senior World Indoor Trials could still be out of reach for the Dearneside High Athletics Club member - his personal best of 4m90 falls short of the expected qualifying standard - but to be competing in such circles is a great testament to the strides the young athlete has made.
A lot of the top athletes in the country are expected to skip the Moscow championships because it clashes with the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Before that Cutts hopes to be involved in the UK City Challenge in Cardiff next weekend (Feb 4 and 5).
Former Olympic javelin star Mick Hill is coaching the Sheffield team in an event which sees all the towns with an English Institute of Sport facility competing against each other.
That means athletes in the catchment area of Sheffield's EIS will be in action, and Cutts is hoping he has done enough on recent form to convince Hill he is worthy of selection.
His last chance to sway the selection process is this Sunday at the Northern Counties Senior AAA's championships at EIS.
His coach at Dearneside, Trevor Fox, said: "As far as I can tell there's nobody in the north of England who can vault as high as Luke.
"He's had a few close shaves at 5m10 and it's only a matter of time before he breaks the 5m barrier, and hopefully that will be in the next couple of weeks.
"He'll be going head-to-head with his rivals for a spot on the City Challenge squad this weekend, and it'll be a good chance for him to show what he can do."
As if that wasn't enough, Cutts has been selected for the England Under-20s squad in an international later next month, back in Cardiff.
His performance last weekend in the North of England AA's Indoor Championships, when he comfortably won gold with a vault of 4m80, went some way to justifying his selection for the national squad.
