Also from the T&F News message board:

Paul Burgess seems to have recovered from the injury that prevented him from competing throughout the summer. He vaulted 5.70m at the weekend (the same height he cleared in his first competition of 2005).

At the same meet, Vicky Parnov (mentioned above) who equalled the age-14 world best with 4.15m last year, improved to 4.20m (although she's 15 now).

The pole vault for men and women were two feature events at the meeting but no South Africans succeeded to record victories. Germany's Tim Lobinger, won the pole vault with a height of 5.50m while Kirsten Belin of Sweden's 4.10m was good enough for a first place in the women's contest.

Okkert Brits, like Lobinger a 6m vaulter, started the year on a disappointing note when he failed to clear his opening height.

Pole Vault: 1 Tim Lobin
ger GER 5.50, 2 Fanie Jacobs US 5.20, 3 Brent Howell Bell 4.60.

Pole Vault: 1 Kirsten Belin SWE 4.10, 2 Samantha Dodd Bell 4.00, 3 Sylma Jordaan Bell 3.50.

Pavlov, only fourth

One of the few disappointments for a generally triumphant Russian team was Igor Pavlov’s fourth place in the men’s Pole Vault. The World and European indoor champion managed only 5.25m but looked to be struggling with a thigh injury. The event was won by Sweden’s Alaji Jeng who cleared 5.55m from Italy’s Giuseppe Gibilisco, the 2003 outdoor World champion.

In fact there were no victories at all for the Italian team, but that was not surprising as most of the original line-up was unable to get out of Italy because of bad weather and many athletes had to perform two or three times.

More info from competition:

[quote="Athletics Leics"][color=blue]Steve Lewis, the 19-year-old Newham and Essex Beagles coached by Steve Rippon at Loughborough University who will represent England at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Melbourne came into this international on the back of a Under-19 British record of 5.30m, recently set at an indoor meeting at Loughborough. Here in Glasgow Lewis was competed for the Commonwealth Select team and after clearing his first attempt at 5.10m, he then continued through the competition with a second attempt clearance at 5.25m in round two. Then in the third round he attempted a mark that if successful would be a new personal best height of 5.40m, and so it was to be as he brilliantly achieved the clearance on his second attempt with a stunning effort. He then went on to fail on all three attempts at the 5.50m height, but he will take great confidence going into the Norwich Union AAA’s at the EIS Arena in Sheffield in two-weeks time and then on to the outdoor season in the heat of Australia. Sweden’s Alaji Jeng won the competition with 5.55m in the final round.

An ecstatic Lewis commented afterwards, “I’m over the moon as I have been working so hard. I was just waiting for the timing to come together, I feel everything is going in the right direction. I’m just going to be pushing at every meeting and hopefully something good will happen in time for the Commonwealth Games.â€Â
