In the pole vault 27-year-old German Björn Otto came up with a surprise of his own. He had jumped 5.60m several times this season, but was only able to clear 5.30m and 5.32m in his last two meetings in July. But in Izmir he tied his personal best with a first time clearance at 5.70m and then bettering that by going over 5.80m with his third attempt.
18-year-old Konstadinos Filippidis (GRE) set his fifth national record of the season taking second place with 5.75m. He also made three unsuccessful attempts at the World Junior record height of 5.80m; Maksim Tarasov (RUS) set this record in July 1989. Filippidis is now second behind Tarasov in the world junior all-time list.
