Cold hampers jumpers
In the men's Pole Vault, the favourite was Brad Walker based upon his just a few days old status as a World Championships medallist. Walker, however, failed at his opening height of 5.53 recording three no-jumps. Instead the event this evening developed into a 3-way battle involving Swedes Patrik Kristiansson and Alhaji Jeng plus USA’s Nick Hysong.
Kristiansson took the lead by making his opening height of 5.53 on first attempt, lost the lead at 5.63 (which he passed) as both Hysong and Jeng cleared first time. But on 5.73 Kristiansson turned the tables once more flying over the bar on his 2nd attempt while Jeng failed three times and Hysong passed. At 5.83 Hysong injured a finger when he lost his grip on the pole and had to sit and watch as Kristiansson concluded with three misses at the would-be national record height of 5.90.
