Olympic pole vault gold medallist Steve Hooker has pulled out of next week's national titles in Brisbane because of a knee injury.

Constant treatment on his sore left knee had allowed Hooker to win a string of overseas titles during the last couple of months.

Hooker says he has withdrawn from the nationals to ensure he will be fit for the World Championships in Berlin in August

A knee injury has forced Australia's olympic pole vault gold medallist Steve Hooker to withdraw from this week's national athletics championships in Brisbane.

The national titles also double as selection trials for August's world championships in Germany, but Hooker has already qualified for Berlin.

Hooker says the injury is a minor setback.

"I feel like I've competed enough this season and I've been jumping well and technically I know what I've been doing so I don't think it's much of a setback," he said.

"I actually think it's a good opportunity for me to get healthy over the next two weeks and then get into some serious training."
