The 4.92m Area record set by Jenn Stuczynski at the United States trials on 6 July had, for the second time this year, following her 4.90m Area record on 18 May, called into question whether Isinbayeva had long to last as World No.1. This drew a response from the Russian when she was asked whether her training for this season had differed in any way from previous years.
“It was not different,” she said. “Everything was like every other time but maybe I am more angry. When Stuczynski jumped 4.90 then 4.92 it made me so angry because everyone started to say ‘Isinbayeva is finished, we have a new star’. It made me angry and I am happy for that feeling because I didn’t feel it enough since my last World record.”
Stuczynski put some fire in Isinbayeva's belly

Just out of curiousity, did Stuczynski say anything else besides that she hopes to kick some russian butt? It seems like Isinbayeva and everyone else is making a huge deal out of this and saying that Jenn has a big mouth. But in retrospect, it's not a big deal at all..

I was at the press conference at the Olympic Trials when Jenn made the comment about kicking some Russian butt and it has since been taken out of context and blown out of proportion by the press.
Here is the audio of the whole quote, in context: http://www.treemo.com/users/polevaultpo ... em/451148/
Short transcript:
"You know the people that are representing the U.S.
I'm very happy for Erica and April
and for us to go over there
I hope we do some damage
and, you know, kick some Russian butt"
[laughter]

Well obviously Isi hasn't been surfing the Treemo archives, so undoubtedly she heard it second-hand from sportswriters who were interested in getting a juicy quote.
However, there have been a couple of other minor things. I've spent the last 15 minutes looking for the article, but evidently it wasn't one of the ones Becca posted to the board. But unless I'm completely losing my mind, there was some article right after Jenn cleared 4.90 at Reebok, but before the Oly Trials and before Isi opened her season in Rome, where she was asked whether she was intimidated by Isinbaeva and answered something to the effect of:
I'm not that impressed - she hasn't raised her outdoor record in almost three years.
On one hand, it was a true statement at the time. On the other, it's not hard to see how it could be interpreted as an insult.
Furthermore, there was this...
"I don’t want to be negative," Stuczynski said, "but the way I look at it is that in three years she has only raised it about three centimeters, so that’s how much she has improved in three years."
Again, on one hand it's a statement of fact, but on the other, it's a bit dismissive.

yeah I definitely see how Isi could've taken that personally. Clearly Stuczynski was wrong, but I think at the time, it might've appeared Isi was done.
Again, on one hand it's a statement of fact, but on the other, it's a bit dismissive.
