Spala, Poland - This year’s edition of Polish national indoor championships, took place in Spala on the 23 to 24 February, and despite the decision of some top stars to skip the winter season in the Olympic year, still resulted in many interesting battles and a few top-class performances.

2005 World championships medallist Monika Pyrek once again provided the highlight of the weekend, vaulting 4.70m to go into fifth place in the yearly world list. The other high points included Tomasz Majewski’s 20.51m in the shot put final and Lukasz Chyla’s 6.59sec in the 60mdash.

As has been the case in Poland in recent years, women’s Pole Vault was the most highly anticipated event of the championships, with Monika Pyrek and World Indoor silver medalist Anna Rogowska fighting it out.

Both of them started the competition well: Rogowska started at 4.30m and cleared it without problems, following it with another first-time clearance at 4.55. Meanwhile, Pyrek started at 4.40 and cleared that height, as well as 4.50 and 4.60, on her first attempt.

At 4.65, however, problems started for Rogowska. She took the bar down on her first try and passed the remaining attempts to 4.70. That height proved too much on the day, although she did come close on one of her vaults. Pyrek passed 4.65 and went straight to 4.70, which she cleared first time with something to spare. The 27-year-old thus won her tenth national indoor title, confirming the good form she showed a few days earlier in Bydgoszcz, where she tied for second place with Yelena Isinbayeva. Pyrek went on to attempt 4.81, one centimetre higher than Rogowska’s national indoor record, but was not able to clear it on this occasion.

Joanna Piwowarska placed third in the competition with a solid 4.40.
