Most fanatic fans of our favorite event would know that Poland's Monica Pyrek has tied or broken her country's national record more times than any other vaulter. In his 2004 edition of the ATFS Handbook, Peter Matthews credits her with 67 national record clearances (40 outdoor, 27 indoor), and she has since added another outdoor mark of 4.72m.
I wondered what vaulter would rank second in this statistic, started to look through my lists of women's national records, then got distracted by wondering whether Pyrek also has improved her country's record by the greatest total distance. I may get back to looking for the vaulter who ranks next to Pyrek in number of record vaults (probably Monique de Wilt?), but for now here's what I found in the way of super-record-busters.
Pyrek does rank high in this category, but is edged out by France's Caroline Ammel. Here are other top record-breakers by total height gains. The three marks shown after each vaulter's name are, in order, NR at the time when first broken by this vaulter, her latest NR, and her total improvement on the record:
