Yelena aiming to break own mark

TOKYO: Olympic and world pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva said on Monday she was determined to break her own two-year-old world record at the World Championships opening in Osaka, Japan, this week.

"I have set out to win the title," the 25-year-old Russian told reporters in Marugame, Japan, where she has been training since last Wednesday.

"I want to make an unforgettable vault in Osaka. I want to set a new world record," she said, according to the Jiji and Kyodo news agencies.

"I am physically and mentally prepared for the championships."

Yelena has broken the women’s world record, both indoor and outdoor, 20 times.
But her outdoor mark has stood still at 5.01 metres since she set it at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki.

"I don’t want to set any limit myself," she said when asked how high she aims to clear in Osaka on the final women’s pole-vault day, Aug 28.

"I want to jump as high as possible."

Yelena cleared 4.91m at an IAAF Golden League event in Paris on July 6 to lead the field this year with US record holder Jenn Stuczynksi at 4.88m. â€â€
