Okay, here's the PV excerpt from the Men's Events Preview:
Pole Vault

German Bjorn Otto starts favourite in the pole vault after registering a lifetime best of 5.90m to win his national title in Leipzig in February. The Germans boast the top three men in the Europeans rankings with Fabian Schulze and Danny Ecker at two and three and former two-time European indoor silver medallist Tim Lobinger is also entered. Defending champion Igor Pavlov of Russia, who always seems to produce his best indoors, has cleared 5.80m this season and Oleksandr Korchmid of the Ukraine with 5.80m is another medal threat.

And I guess the men's qualifying round was about three hours ago. Here are the results:

Full results breakdown here.

I gotta feel bad for Joanna Piwowarska, since 4.50 is a new PB and still didn't make the cut. :( All four of the gals who took shots at 4.55 were in group A, so it looks like there was a fairly spirited fight.

BTW, Spiegelburg, Persson, Berglund and Dennison also had PB's (Persson & Berglund =NR).

The men's final is in progress now, with live results here.

The flash interviews for the men's PV on the EAA site seem to be screwed up. I'm not sure if they've got the wrong medals with the names, or the wrong names with the quotes, but I'm really quite sure that it's Ecker who took the gold and Otto the bronze. But here's what's on the site ...

Danny Ecker (GER) - BRONZE
Pole Vault Men Final

It is strange to have such a short competition - our national final was over three hours long but this was over in less than two! Yesterday I would have said the winner would have to jump 5.80 or more but everyone had a poor day today.

Oleksandr Korchmid (UKR) - SILVER
Pole Vault Men Final

Silver is OK but I came for the gold. I cannot say that I am happy with my overall performance but I still ended up with a medal. I have competed in Britain a few times and its always been a good place for me.

Björn Otto (GER) - GOLD
Pole Vault Men Final

It was not a good competiton. I had to change my pole for a harder one but it is not a good thing to do at a Championship. I think the heights were not good today and we all feel as if we were poor today. I guess a win is a win no matter what height is jumped.

And from the women's quals ...

Anna Rogowska (POL)
Pole Vault Women Qualification Group B

I am feeling very comfortable, even though it was an early start for us all. I am looking forward to the competition tomorrow, I want to win a medal. But the two Russian girls are the ones to beat, they will be very strong.

Svetlana Feofanova (RUS)
Pole Vault Women Qualification Group A

I felt very bad as its too early, and the pole vault is a very technical event. I couldn't get my focus. But I am happy to get 4.55m. I want to win and I am going to fight in the final.

Linda Berglund (SWE) - NATIONAL RECORD
Pole Vault Women Qualification Group A

I'm very pleased to break the national record. I don't know why I've jumped so well. Everything just flowed and my body felt good. I am only in eighth so I don't think I will be in the final as there is another round to come, but I am still pleased.

Yow! Golubchikova takes the lead with a new PB of 4.71 on her second attempt!

Now a third failure for Rogowska, so she's got the bronze, and Feofanova passes to 4.76.

Now Feofanova clears 4.76 on her first try!

First attempt miss by Golubchikova.

Now a second miss. C'mon Yuliya! :)

Nope ... a third miss for Golubchikova. So it's gold for Feofanova!

Code: Select all

Pole Vault Women

Hütter, Julia        GER o   xxx

Actually they just showed the video, and I guess Golubchikova didn't even take the third attempt. Oh well.

Flash quotes from the EAA site ...

Anna Rogowska (POL)
Pole Vault Women Final

I have not had much training or competition because of an injury so to get a medal at a European Championship is very good. I am below what I should be jumping so I am a little disappointed. I will be looking to improve on my PB during this year and come back stronger.

Yuliya Golubchikova (RUS)
Pole Vault Women Final

I have to happy to get a medal but my performance was a little below what I can do. I was looking to go near my PB but it didn't happen today.

Svetlana Feofanova (RUS) - GOLD
Pole Vault Women Final

That was a very good day. I am so happy to get the gold medal. I had two attempts at 4.71 but I would be in second position. So I went to 4.76 to get first place. It did not affect my competition with Yelena not being here, I still would jump the same. It was still a good competion.

Here are the PV event summaries for both the men and women from the EAA site ...
[quote]Pole Vault Men Final: Ecker adds to his mother medal

German Danny Ecker captured his first major title in a below-par final to match the achievements of his mother, Heide Rosendahl, by becoming a European Indoor champion .

Rosendahl struck gold in the women’s long jump at the 1971 edition of the championships in Sofia some six years before Ecker was born but the 29-year-old has himself enjoyed a distinguished career and it was reward for a long career at the top level.
