Vaulting ambitions hit by time trial

New Delhi, November 11, 2006
National pole vault record holder VS Sureka could not hide her disappointment after returning a sub-par performance in the final trials for the Doha Asiads in New Delhi on Saturday.
After her third attempt, which was just four metres, she was too downcast to say anything, only muttering that: “I think I will quit.â€Â

Champion vaulter on pole-hunt

New Delhi, November 23: It’s easy to boast as the hosts of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It’s another story living up to such high goals. With the country’s top sportspersons a neglected lot, too many hurdles lie on the way to glory.
Take the example of women’s national pole vault record holder VS Surekha. Her plight came to light when she moved among the probables for the Doha Asian Games. She had recently cleared a height of 4.08m, which was not only new national mark but her personal best this season.
At this point, though, the national record holder is being forced to run from pillar to post to get new pole which she feels is essential for her to excel in Doha. “Without right kind of pole it would be difficult for me to give my best,â€Â
