There are 10 vaulters who cleared 5.70 plus Averbukh who passed.
Averbukh has 5.65 with no misses. Da Silva has 5.65 on a first with misses. Liu has it on a second attempt and Bukhalov on a third.
21:07 : Even if Averbukh misses at 5.75m, he and Da Silva of Brazil will advance as the 11th and 12th qualifiers, back at 5.65m.
I am skeptical that they are actually raising the bar.
And the qualifiers are now announced. It is the 10 who cleared 5.70 plus Averbukh and da Silva.
Hartwig and Pauli both fail to make finals, a big disappointment for the Americans. Not much video shown on WCSN, but I am sure they will show a lot more for the finals.
Back to bed for me!

Dang. Two of my dark horse picks just miss the final...Liu and Bukhalov.
You never know which Pavlov is gonna show up...the 5.90 vaulter or the 5.40 vaulter. Looks like the 5.90 vaulter did. Mesnil looked great clearing 5.82 a few weeks back by about 4 inches and was clean today. Should be a good final with good number over 5.85-5.90 as long as it doesn't rain like two years ago.

"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."

Athletics: Averbukh through to pole vault final
By ALLON SINAI
Alex Averbukh proved again on Thursday afternoon why he's widely regarded as Israel's greatest athlete.
The double European Pole Vault champion, cleared 5.55 meters and 5.65m in his first attempts at the World Championships in Osaka and booked his place in the final which will take place on Saturday.
The 32-year-old will be competing in his third World Championship final and will be looking to go one place better than he did last time around.
Averbukh won the silver medal at Edmonton in 2001, two years after claiming the bronze at the 1999 championships.
He will, however, have to improve dramatically on his season's best if he's to have a chance of winning a medal of any color on Saturday.
The Israeli has only jumped 5.70m this year, over 20 centimeters less than the season best of favorites Brad Walker, Bjorn Otto and Steven Hooker.

Men's Pole Vault Qualifying
Brad Walker (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.): Took three jumps. Cleared 5.70 after that, and luckily got the chance to shut it down. It's anybody's game, and I am sure there will be a lot of people in the mix in the finals.
Jeff Hartwig (Jonesboro, Ark.): A bit frustrating. I feel like I was in much better shape at the US championships than I am right now. I put a lot of effort into just getting here at the nationals that I left myself short here.
Jacob Pauli (Cedar Falls, Iowa): Everything was going good. Made 5.55 on the first attempt, then made a decision to pass 5.65, which ultimately made the final. Conditions were decent. This is a building block for next year, but it's still super disappointing.
