Dunno why this is listed as an NR when he jumped 5.70 a few weeks ago...and he's still 19...

Dunno. Seems to have been corrected in the online results now:

WINS by Australian athletes in Golden League meetings are rare enough. Quinellas are hen's teeth.

Paul Burgess and Steve Hooker finished first and second in the pole vault at the Rome Golden League on Friday, Burgess clearing 5.82 metres, Hooker 5.77, before both took three unsuccessful attempts at 5.97, which would have broken the stadium record held by Sergey Bubka.

Burgess had a good competition, Hooker said he had "a rough day", but one thing they had in common was the desire to dominate the competition. They have been training together in Perth with Alex Parnov and are sharing a base in Europe.

"We talked about it," Burgess said, "and we would love to keep on doing it."

With no major championships this year, the main event will be the world athletics final in Stuttgart in September.

"We've got this aim to finish one-two there," Burgess said yesterday. "It will be tough, but it would be great to do it."

Last year's world No. 1, Brad Walker of the US, was third, 2004 Olympic silver and bronze medallists Toby Stevenson and Giuseppe Gibilisco fifth and 10th, respectively.

Australian pole vaulter Paul Burgess has returned to top form by winning the men’s pole vault at the Golden League meet in Rome ahead of fellow Australian Steve Hooker.

‘Budgie’ took the victory on his second vault at 5.82metres, Hooker cleared 5.77m to relagte world number 1 Brad Walker (USA) to third on 5.72m.

Burgess, the world number seven ranked vaulter, was the only man to clear over 6 metres in 2005 but has so far had a dismal 2006. He failed to record a height at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and missed the World Championships in Helsinki through injury.

This week's result, however, restores Burgess's drive towards the2007 Osaka World Championships and Beijing 2008.

Hooker, the Commonwealth champion, has also raised his stakes by taking silver. Ranked fifth in the world, he continues his rise on the international rankings with a string of good results over the past 12 months and has proved yet again that he will be a force to content with at the 2008 Olympics.
