ATHLETICS: Despair again for Roslinda at worlds

2009/08/17

ROSLINDA Samsu's second appearance at the World Championships on Saturday in Berlin ended the same way as her first two years ago.

The 27-year-old from Kedah managed to clear only 4.25m in the women's pole vault qualification round before crashing out as she attempted to equal her national record of 4.40.

Roslinda qualified for the world meet just a day before the qualification deadline with her season's best of 4.35 at the Mini Olympics competition in Bukit Jalil.

After clearing the bar at the second time of asking at her opening height of 4.10, she proceeded to past the 4.25 height on the second attempt as well.

But three failed attempts at 4.40 meant Roslinda fell short of the cut-off mark for the final round of 4.50.

Gold medal favourite Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia led 11 other women into the final after clearing 4.55.

Roslinda can take comfort, however, from the setback of her China rival Gao Shuying, who failed to clear her opening height, as the two vaulters are set to duel at the Asian Championship in Guangzhou, where the Malaysian is the defending champion.
